Setting File/Directory Permissions

You may tweak the permissions of various files/directories in your website, from the File Manager interface. This can be achieved by following the process described below:

  1. Open the File Manager interface.1

  2. Click Web/web in the list of files/directories to open the web directory.

  3. Select one or more files/directories and click Chmod, in the menu above the list of files/directories.

  4. You have two options to set the permissions of a file/directory.

    A. Set common permissions of all files/directories

    1. Select the Read, Write and Execute permissions for the groups - Owner, Group and Everyone.

    2. If you have selected multiple files/directories, then you need to click the Set all permissions button to set these permissions for all.

    B. Individually select the permissions of each file/directory

You can set permissions to files/directories individually by selecting the appropriate check boxes provided for each file/directory. Alternatively, if you know the numeric value of the file permissions, you may enter the same in the textbox adjacent to Chmod value.

    Note

If you are setting the permissions for a directory, you can choose to set the same permission to all the files/subdirectories within that directory by selecting the check box adjacent to Chmod also the files within this directory or/and Chmod also the subdirectories within this directory.

  5. Click to submit the permissions.

Note

Be extremely careful when modifying the file/directory permissions, as it may lead to website visitors either not being able to view a particular file or worse have read/write/execute access to a file that you may not have wished to grant.

If you feel you have erred, you may either seek expert advise or simply delete and re-upload the original file/directory (after taking a backup of the current file/directory).
